In September 2023, Intel formally introduced Thunderbolt 5, the successor to Thunderbolt 4, which had remained the standard since 2020. This new interface brings measured yet meaningful upgrades in speed, power, and display capability—crafted for modern, high-throughput workflows.
Bandwidth and Performance Gains
Thunderbolt 5 doubles the base bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, moving from 40 Gbps to 80 Gbps bi-directionally. It also introduces Bandwidth Boost, allowing up to 120 Gbps of unidirectional throughput for display-heavy tasks such as multi-monitor setups or 8K video output.
The standard also enhances PCIe throughput, increasing the minimum required PCIe connection from 32 Gbps (Gen 3 x4) to 64 Gbps (Gen 4 x4). This is especially useful for external SSDs, AI accelerators, and GPU enclosures.
Power and Display Advancements
Thunderbolt 5 raises USB Power Delivery to 240W, compared to Thunderbolt 4's 100W maximum. This allows more flexibility in charging power-hungry laptops and peripherals through a single cable, streamlining professional desk setups.
It also supports DisplayPort 2.1, enabling dual 6K displays, dual 8K displays, or even a single 10K monitor in the right configurations. The result is smoother performance for video editors, creators, and technical professionals working with high-resolution media.
Backward Compatibility and Ecosystem
Thunderbolt 5 continues to use the USB-C connector and maintains full compatibility with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and DisplayPort devices. This ensures existing accessories can be used without concern, preserving investment in current setups.
Though still in early deployment, Thunderbolt 5 is now beginning to appear in premium laptops (including Intel-based Windows systems and Apple’s latest M4 Pro and Max Macs), as well as in docking stations, monitors, and high-speed SSDs throughout 2025.
