What is GrapheneOS? The Android alternative focused on privacy and security

Most Android phones come with a version of Android heavily customized by the manufacturer, along with Google services and a collection of preinstalled software. GrapheneOS takes a different approach.

GrapheneOS is an open-source mobile operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), with a strong focus on privacy and security while maintaining compatibility with Android applications. It is developed as a nonprofit project rather than by a major smartphone manufacturer. 

It still looks and works recognizably like Android, but changes how certain parts of the operating system handle permissions, applications, Google services and security.

A different approach to Android

GrapheneOS is not a completely separate mobile platform in the way iOS and Android are separate platforms. It uses the Android Open Source Project as its foundation and retains support for Android apps.

The difference is in how the operating system is configured and hardened.

GrapheneOS adds additional security protections, privacy controls and changes to parts of Android's underlying architecture. Its developers also maintain components such as Vanadium, a privacy- and security-enhanced Chromium-based browser. 

The objective is not simply to remove Google from a phone. It is to give users greater control over what applications and services can access.

Google apps are optional

One of the most common misconceptions about GrapheneOS is that using it means giving up Google apps completely.

That is not necessarily the case.

GrapheneOS provides a sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer. Google Play services and the Play Store can be installed as ordinary sandboxed applications rather than receiving the privileged system-level access they typically have on conventional Android installations. 

Users can therefore choose whether they want Google services and install them only in the user profile where they are needed.

This approach also means GrapheneOS can support many applications that depend on Google Play while giving users more control over those services.

Stronger app isolation

Application permissions are another important part of GrapheneOS.

Android already provides an application sandbox, but GrapheneOS adds further security and privacy controls around applications. Users can restrict access to certain sensors and network-related functionality, while additional exploit protections are applied at the operating-system level. 

The system also includes a hardened memory allocator and other security mechanisms designed to make common classes of software vulnerabilities more difficult to exploit. These protections are intended to reduce the potential impact of memory-safety bugs rather than assuming applications will never contain them.

Security starts with the hardware

GrapheneOS also makes extensive use of hardware-backed security features on supported devices.

Its installation process uses Android Verified Boot to verify the operating system and firmware during startup and provide rollback protection. GrapheneOS also provides an Auditor application that can use hardware-backed attestation and verified boot information to help verify that a device and its operating system have not been tampered with. 

This is one reason hardware support matters so much for GrapheneOS. Installing an alternative operating system is not enough by itself; the underlying phone needs appropriate security capabilities.

Why Pixel phones?

GrapheneOS has traditionally been closely associated with Google Pixel devices.

That is not simply because Pixel phones are popular among privacy enthusiasts. The project has specific hardware and firmware security requirements, and supported devices need features that allow GrapheneOS to maintain its security model.

GrapheneOS currently provides official releases for a range of Pixel devices, including recent Pixel generations. 

That hardware relationship is also beginning to change. GrapheneOS announced a partnership with Motorola, with official support for selected Motorola smartphones expected to begin in 2027. The initial devices are expected to be higher-end models, followed by Motorola's Razr foldables.

The expansion could make GrapheneOS available to a considerably broader range of Android users.

Is GrapheneOS completely private?

No operating system can make a smartphone completely private.

GrapheneOS provides additional controls and reduces the amount of privileged access available to applications and services, but users still have to make decisions about which apps they install, what permissions they grant and which online services they use.

There can also be compatibility limitations. Some applications, particularly certain banking apps and other software with aggressive security or anti-tampering systems, may behave differently on an alternative Android operating system. GrapheneOS provides compatibility options for many Google-dependent applications, but it cannot guarantee that every Android app will work perfectly. 

Who is GrapheneOS for?

GrapheneOS is primarily aimed at people who want more control over privacy and security without giving up the Android application ecosystem.

It can be particularly interesting to users who want to minimize Google's system-level presence, restrict application access more aggressively or take advantage of additional security protections.

For someone who simply wants a phone that works with minimal configuration, a conventional Android device may be more convenient. GrapheneOS offers more control, but that control can also require more involvement from the user.

The bigger picture

GrapheneOS represents one of the more significant alternatives within the Android ecosystem. It demonstrates that an Android-based phone does not necessarily have to use the same combination of operating-system components, permissions and Google services found on a conventional Android device.

With the project now preparing to expand beyond Pixel hardware, its approach could reach a much larger audience.

GrapheneOS is ultimately not about replacing Android. It is about taking the Android foundation and building a mobile operating system around a different priority: giving security and privacy a more central role while keeping the flexibility and app compatibility that make Android useful.
