GrapheneOS is finally coming to more phones

GrapheneOS has spent much of its life closely associated with Google’s Pixel lineup. That is about to change.

The privacy- and security-focused Android operating system is preparing to expand its official hardware support to Motorola smartphones in 2027, marking its first major move beyond Pixel devices. The partnership could give GrapheneOS a significantly broader hardware base while bringing its security-focused approach to phones from another major Android manufacturer. 

The expansion will not happen across Motorola's entire lineup. GrapheneOS says its initial supported devices will be higher-end Motorola phones, with support planned first for a conventional flagship and later for the company's Razr foldables

Why Motorola matters

GrapheneOS is not simply a different Android skin. It is an Android-based operating system designed around stronger privacy and security, with additional hardening, exploit mitigations and permission controls. It remains compatible with Android applications. 

Until now, Pixel hardware has been central to that approach. GrapheneOS has specific hardware-security requirements, including technologies that help protect against certain classes of attacks.

That makes the Motorola partnership more significant than simply adding another list of compatible phones. Motorola is working with the GrapheneOS Foundation on hardware intended to meet the project's requirements rather than leaving users to install the software themselves on unsupported devices. Motorola and GrapheneOS announced their long-term partnership in March. 

The first phones are still a year away

The first Motorola devices with official GrapheneOS support are expected in 2027.

Recent details from the project indicate that a traditional flagship will come first, followed by Motorola's Razr Fold and Razr Ultra-class foldables. That would make GrapheneOS available on a form factor it has not officially supported before. 

The upcoming hardware is also expected to use newer Qualcomm platforms that provide security features required by GrapheneOS, including hardware memory tagging and secure-element capabilities. Current Motorola models do not fully meet the project's requirements. 

GrapheneOS has also indicated that supported Motorola devices will need a substantially longer software-support commitment than some of the company's current phones. Reports based on the project's latest information point to seven years of updates for the planned supported hardware. 

Pixel support isn't going away

The move beyond Pixel does not mean GrapheneOS is abandoning Google's phones.

Pixel devices will continue to be supported, including future generations, according to the project. The Motorola partnership instead gives users another hardware option and reduces GrapheneOS's dependence on a single smartphone manufacturer. 

That could also make the operating system more accessible to people who like its privacy and security model but do not want to buy a Pixel.

What about cheaper Motorola phones?

For now, the focus is on higher-end hardware.

GrapheneOS has said that bringing official support to less expensive Motorola devices would require those phones to meet its security requirements and receive sufficiently long software support. That makes broader support across Motorola's budget lineup less certain in the near term. 

The initial devices are therefore likely to remain relatively premium products rather than inexpensive alternatives to conventional Android phones.

Why this matters for Android

GrapheneOS remains a niche platform compared with Google's Android distribution, Samsung's One UI and other mainstream Android software. But Motorola's involvement could make its approach more visible to ordinary smartphone buyers.

Instead of downloading and installing an alternative operating system onto an existing phone, users could eventually have access to officially supported hardware designed with GrapheneOS compatibility in mind.

That is an important distinction. It could simplify the experience while allowing GrapheneOS to maintain the hardware-backed security features that are central to its design.

The expansion also comes at a time when smartphone privacy and security are becoming increasingly important. More applications, services and AI features are handling sensitive information on phones, making the underlying security model of the device more relevant to consumers.

A bigger future for GrapheneOS

GrapheneOS is not becoming a mainstream Android competitor overnight. Its first Motorola devices are still expected to arrive in 2027, and the project will continue supporting Pixel hardware.

But the Motorola partnership represents a meaningful change in its strategy.

GrapheneOS is moving from an operating system closely tied to one family of phones toward a platform that can support hardware from multiple manufacturers. If the planned Motorola devices meet the project's security and software-support requirements, the move could give privacy-focused Android users their first major alternative to Pixel hardware.
