What Makes an “AI Phone” an AI Phone?

The term “AI phone” has quickly become a standard part of smartphone marketing. But almost every modern smartphone uses some form of artificial intelligence, from computational photography to spam detection.

So what actually makes a phone an AI phone?

The difference is not simply having an AI app. A more capable AI phone combines dedicated AI hardware, on-device models, cloud services and deeper operating-system integration to perform tasks that traditionally required more manual input or external services.

Dedicated AI Hardware

Modern smartphone processors increasingly include a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) or similar AI accelerator.

The CPU handles general-purpose computing, while the GPU is optimized for graphics and highly parallel workloads. An NPU is designed specifically for machine-learning operations and can process certain AI workloads efficiently while helping manage power consumption.

This hardware can support tasks such as:

  • Speech recognition
  • Image and video processing
  • Real-time translation
  • Generative AI
  • Voice processing
  • Object and scene recognition

The exact capabilities depend on the phone's processor and the AI models it supports.

On-Device AI Is a Key Difference

One of the most important developments is the ability to run AI directly on the phone.

Traditional cloud-based AI generally works like this:

Phone → Internet → Cloud server → Processing → Phone

On-device AI can instead work like this:

Phone → AI hardware → Result

Local processing can reduce latency and allow certain features to work without an internet connection. It can also keep some information on the device rather than sending it to a remote server.

However, AI phones are not necessarily completely offline. Large models and computationally demanding tasks may still be processed in the cloud.

AI Is Moving Into the Operating System

Another defining characteristic is system-level integration.

Instead of AI being limited to a standalone chatbot, it can appear throughout the phone:

Camera: Enhances images, recognizes scenes and enables advanced editing.

Calls: Can provide transcription, translation or summaries on supported devices.

Keyboard: Can rewrite, summarize or adjust the tone of text.

Photos: Can search images using natural language and perform AI-assisted edits.

Voice assistants: Can understand more complex requests and interact with information on the device.

Productivity apps: Can summarize notes, documents, messages and other content.

This integration is arguably more important than simply adding another AI application.

Generative AI Raises the Bar

Older smartphones were already using AI extensively, but mostly behind the scenes.

Modern AI phones increasingly use generative AI, which can create or transform content.

For example, a phone may be able to:

  • Rewrite a message
  • Summarize a conversation
  • Translate speech
  • Generate or modify an image
  • Summarize a webpage or document
  • Answer questions about information on the screen

These capabilities require significantly more capable models and hardware than many traditional smartphone AI functions.

The Cloud Still Has a Role

The idea that an AI phone does everything locally is misleading.

Modern smartphones can use a hybrid approach, deciding whether a task should run on the device or in the cloud.

A relatively small task may be handled locally for speed or privacy, while a larger generative-AI request may be sent to a cloud service with substantially more computing power.

This means two phones can both advertise AI capabilities while having very different levels of on-device processing.

What Actually Makes a Phone an AI Phone?

There is no single specification that officially defines an AI phone. Instead, it is the combination of several technologies:

CapabilityWhy It Matters
AI acceleratorProvides specialized hardware for AI workloads
Modern SoCCombines CPU, GPU and AI processing
Sufficient memoryHelps run increasingly capable AI models
On-device AIEnables some processing without the cloud
Generative AIAllows the phone to create and transform content
OS integrationMakes AI available across multiple functions
Cloud AIProvides access to larger models and greater computing power

The Bottom Line

An AI phone is not simply a smartphone with an AI chatbot installed.

The more meaningful definition is a phone where AI hardware, models and software are integrated into everyday smartphone functions.

The important questions are therefore not whether a phone carries an “AI” label, but what its AI can actually do, which features work locally, which require the cloud, how well they perform and how long those capabilities will be supported.

As AI becomes a standard part of smartphone processors and operating systems, the distinction between an AI phone and a conventional smartphone will increasingly depend on the depth and usefulness of that integration—not the marketing label itself.
