Huawei Pura X Max: The Successor to Arguably the Most Unique Foldable of 2025, the Huawei Pura X

Huawei is continuing its unconventional approach to foldable smartphones with the Pura X Max, a device that builds on the design philosophy introduced by the Pura X in 2025. While most foldables prioritize a tall, narrow form factor, Huawei's "wide foldable" concept focuses on a broader display, aiming to deliver a more natural experience for reading, multitasking, productivity, and media consumption. The original Huawei Pura X was widely regarded as one of the most distinctive foldables of 2025 thanks to its unique horizontally wide design, and the Pura X Max expands on that idea with a larger display, upgraded hardware, and refined engineering.

The Pura X Max features a 7.7-inch LTPO 2 OLED inner display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a 5.4-inch cover display, maintaining Huawei's wide aspect ratio. This layout offers more usable screen space than conventional book-style foldables while remaining compact when folded. Huawei also equips the device with second-generation Kunlun Glass on the outer display and its Basalt Waterdrop Hinge, designed to improve durability while helping minimize the visibility of the display crease.

Powering the device is Huawei's Kirin 9030 Pro chipset paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB. The smartphone ships with HarmonyOS 6.1 and includes a 5,300mAh battery supporting 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

Photography remains a major focus. The rear camera system includes a 50MP variable-aperture main camera (f/1.4–f/4.0) with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS, and a 12.5MP ultra-wide camera, accompanied by Huawei's True-to-Color imaging system. For selfies and video calls, the device features an 8MP front camera on both the inner and cover displays, offering a consistent experience whether folded or unfolded.

Rather than competing by making the thinnest foldable, Huawei is pursuing a different direction by rethinking how a foldable should feel in everyday use. The Pura X Max combines flagship hardware with a wider display format that stands apart from traditional foldable designs. Whether this approach becomes an industry trend remains to be seen, but it further reinforces Huawei's willingness to explore new ideas in the foldable smartphone market.
