60Hz vs 90Hz vs 120Hz Displays Explained: Does Refresh Rate Really Matter?

A few years ago, 60Hz was normal for almost every smartphone. Today, even affordable phones may advertise 90Hz or 120Hz displays as a major feature.

Higher numbers sound better—but what do they actually change?

A 120Hz screen can make scrolling, animations, and supported games look noticeably smoother than a 60Hz display. But refresh rate is only one part of display quality, and a higher number does not automatically mean a better screen.

Here's what 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz really mean.

What Is Refresh Rate?

A display's refresh rate tells you how many times the screen can refresh its image every second. It is measured in hertz (Hz).

So:

  • 60Hz = up to 60 refreshes per second
  • 90Hz = up to 90 refreshes per second
  • 120Hz = up to 120 refreshes per second

The higher the refresh rate, the shorter the interval between screen updates.

At 60Hz, a refresh occurs roughly every 16.7 milliseconds. At 90Hz, that falls to about 11.1 ms, and at 120Hz, approximately 8.3 ms. Android's performance documentation uses roughly these same frame-time windows when discussing 60, 90, and 120 fps rendering.

That can make motion appear smoother and the interface feel more immediate.

But there's an important distinction.

Refresh Rate Is Not the Same as Frame Rate

Refresh rate describes what the display is capable of showing.

Frame rate, usually measured in frames per second or FPS, describes how many frames the software or game is actually producing.

A 120Hz screen can refresh up to 120 times each second, but that doesn't mean every game or video is running at 120 FPS.

If a game produces only 60 FPS, a 120Hz panel cannot magically create 120 unique game frames.

This is why both the display and the content matter.

Android, for example, allows applications to indicate their intended frame rate, while the operating system considers the display's supported modes and other conditions when choosing an appropriate refresh rate.

What Does 60Hz Feel Like?

A 60Hz display refreshes up to 60 times per second.

For normal smartphone use, 60Hz remains perfectly functional. Messaging, web browsing, video streaming, photography, navigation, and most everyday applications work well at 60Hz.

It is also still a common frame-rate target for software and games.

The weakness becomes more noticeable when you compare it directly with a well-implemented higher-refresh-rate display.

When rapidly scrolling through a webpage or social-media feed, text and images generally appear less fluid in motion than they do at 90Hz or 120Hz.

Animations can also feel less immediate.

That doesn't make 60Hz bad. It simply provides fewer visual updates each second.

Where 60Hz makes sense

60Hz can still be an excellent choice when battery efficiency, price, or basic everyday use matters more than maximum smoothness.

For users who don't care much about gaming or fluid animations, it may be entirely sufficient.

What Does 90Hz Change?

90Hz sits between traditional 60Hz and higher-end 120Hz.

And that middle ground can be surprisingly effective.

Moving from 60Hz to 90Hz increases the maximum number of screen refreshes by 50%.

The difference is often visible while:

  • Scrolling through webpages
  • Navigating menus
  • Moving between home screens
  • Browsing social feeds
  • Viewing interface animations
  • Playing games that support higher frame rates

Android's own performance guidance notes that many newer devices use 90Hz during interactions such as scrolling.

For many people, 60Hz → 90Hz is the more immediately noticeable upgrade compared with the next step from 90Hz to 120Hz.

That's because the benefits of increasing refresh rate have diminishing perceptual returns.

90Hz already feels considerably smoother than 60Hz, while requiring fewer refreshes than 120Hz.

This makes it an attractive compromise between smoothness and power consumption.

What Does 120Hz Change?

At 120Hz, the display can refresh up to 120 times every second—twice the maximum rate of a 60Hz display.

Scrolling can look exceptionally fluid. System animations can feel immediate, and games capable of rendering at high frame rates can feel more responsive.

The difference is particularly valuable for:

Fast scrolling: Text and interface elements move more smoothly across the screen.

Gaming: Games capable of producing high frame rates can take better advantage of the display.

Animations: Transitions and interface motion can appear more fluid.

Responsiveness: Because the display has more opportunities to present updated visual information, interactions can feel more immediate when the software and hardware keep up.

But 120Hz has a cost.

Does Higher Refresh Rate Use More Battery?

Generally, higher refresh rates can increase power consumption because the display and other parts of the system may need to do more work.

Google's Android game-development guidance explicitly notes that higher refresh rates improve smoothness but increase display power consumption.

That doesn't mean a 120Hz phone will always have terrible battery life.

Modern devices increasingly use adaptive or variable refresh-rate systems.

Instead of operating at maximum refresh rate constantly, a phone can reduce the rate when high refresh isn't useful and increase it when smoother motion is beneficial.

For example, a mostly static screen doesn't need to be treated the same way as rapidly scrolling content.

Android's adaptive refresh-rate system on supported hardware is specifically designed to adjust refresh behavior according to content and reduce unnecessary power consumption.

Implementation matters enormously.

A well-optimized adaptive 120Hz display can therefore be much more efficient than simply forcing 120Hz continuously.

Why a 120Hz Screen Isn't Always Better

Refresh rate is only one characteristic of display quality.

A great display also depends on factors such as:

  • Resolution and pixel density
  • Color accuracy
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Viewing angles
  • Touch responsiveness
  • OLED or LCD panel quality
  • HDR performance
  • Software optimization
  • Adaptive refresh-rate behavior

A high-quality 90Hz OLED can easily be more desirable overall than a mediocre 120Hz LCD.

Similarly, poorly optimized software can stutter even on a 120Hz screen.

Higher refresh rate gives the device the opportunity to display smoother motion. The hardware and software still need to deliver frames consistently.

Why 120Hz Doesn't Mean 120 FPS Gaming

This distinction is particularly important when buying a gaming phone.

A phone may have a 120Hz display while a particular game runs at only 30 or 60 FPS.

Games must support higher frame rates, and the processor and GPU must be powerful enough to produce those frames consistently.

The operating system can also restrict high refresh rates under certain conditions. Android documentation notes that factors such as battery-saving modes and device temperature can affect whether higher requested rates are actually used.

So don't buy a phone for “120 FPS gaming” merely because the specification sheet says 120Hz display.

Those are related—but different—claims.

Can You Actually See the Difference?

Most people can perceive a difference between 60Hz and 120Hz, particularly during scrolling and animations.

But sensitivity varies.

Some people immediately notice higher refresh rates. Others barely care.

The difference between 60Hz and 90Hz can already be substantial because motion receives 50% more refresh opportunities.

Going from 90Hz to 120Hz adds another 33% relative to 90Hz, so the improvement is real but often less dramatic.

There's no universal point at which every person stops noticing improvements.

What matters is whether the improvement is meaningful to you.

Which Refresh Rate Should You Choose?

Choose 60Hz if:

You mainly want a functional display, don't care much about maximum animation smoothness, or prioritize affordability and battery efficiency.

Choose 90Hz if:

You want a noticeably smoother interface without necessarily chasing the highest specification.

For many users, 90Hz is an excellent middle ground.

Choose 120Hz if:

You value very smooth scrolling, play high-frame-rate games, or simply want the most fluid everyday interface among these three options.

Ideally, look for a device with an effective adaptive refresh-rate system rather than focusing only on the maximum number.

The Bottom Line

The difference between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz is straightforward:

Higher refresh rates allow the display to update more frequently, making compatible motion and interactions appear smoother.

60Hz remains perfectly usable.

90Hz provides a meaningful improvement and an appealing balance.

120Hz delivers the smoothest experience of the three when the software and hardware can actually take advantage of it.

But don't judge a display by refresh rate alone.

A 120Hz badge doesn't guarantee excellent image quality, great battery life, or 120 FPS gaming.

Refresh rate tells you how frequently the screen can update—not how good everything shown on that screen will be.

The best display isn't necessarily the one with the biggest Hz number. It's the one that combines smoothness, image quality, efficiency, and good software behavior.
