1. KDE Plasma desktop
The KDE Plasma desktop is the most feature-packed and Windows 8 and Windows 10-like desktop environment, with most Windows-like features, layout and apps, with the launcher at the place where we have Start on Windows on the left to launch applications quickly. You can bookmark applications and search for any document or folder.
You have system settings, quick settings, and a system monitor to view running processes and more.
On the bottom right, you have the time and date, and next to the time and date, you have all the frequent settings like Wi-Fi, sound, brightness, Bluetooth, etc. It also comes with a dark mode and has many widgets that come along, and it comes with an Android application, KDE Connect, so your desktop environment can be connected to your phone or vice versa to see notifications on both.

2. GNOME
The GNOME comes with left-sided app icons middled in a list, with the last having a menu icon by which all the other apps can be seen from, so you can open any app. In the center, beneath the top center, you have a search box to search for any app. On the top right, you have frequent settings like airplane mode, sound, night mode, and more. On the top center, you have the date and time.
The latest version of GNOME is GNOME 47 “Denver," which comes with the app icons list and the menu on the bottom center.
3. XFCE
The XFCE desktop environment is the most lightweight, simple, and very clean desktop environment. At first glance, you may feel its design is old.
It has the main menu apps in the bottom center. It has the desktop icons on the desktop starting from the left.
On the top right you have the date and time, and next to that you have frequent settings.
As of December 15, 2024, XFCE 4.20 is the latest of XFCE.
4. Mate
The MATE desktop environment was introduced 13 years ago, on August 19, 2011.
The latest version of the MATE desktop environment is MATE 1.28 by February 27, 2024. Mate comes with a bar on the bottom and on the top. The time and date, weather, battery, and other settings are on the top right, and you can navigate through the application bar, places, and system on the left. With some icons and utilities on the desktop.
Its a simpler desktop environment.
5. Pantheon
The Pantheon is the desktop environment of the elementary OS. It comes with a glossy & modern look, with a unique centered apps tray. It has a power on/off, notifications, battery, and internet, plus more settings on the very right. Date and time are on the top center. It has an application search box on the top left. It also comes with dark and light modes. The latest version of Pantheon by March 18, 2025, is elementary OS 8.0.1 circe.
